Aisha Al-Naama
I’m a Qatari student in Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar of class 2011. Currently majoring in Graphic design. I chose to participate in the Synapse problem seeking class for two reasons. I decided to first join this class for the fact that researching and problem seeking is one of my main interests as a graphic design student, especially when it deals with relating to the Qatari context. The other reason why I chose to be in the Synapse class is because I’m interested to work with students from other disciplines, and work with different styles of research and communication. I believe that Interacting with people from different disciplines would enhance my learning and provide me with a more complete approach to design.
Asma Al Thani
I am born in Qatar, and lived all my life here. I am very interested in arts and design. Growing up in a place where the only thing that is consistent is change, holding on to my culture and tradition was difficult. Looking at Doha now, and its major development in education and knowledge, I was curious about why western knowledge and theories were preferred over ours. People’s values towards essential knowledge changed significantly, from traditional to global.
Through my studies I gained a better understanding of my identity as a designer. Creating a base in which traditional and global knowledge are balanced would initiate solutions that would benefit Qatar’s development. I feel that it is my responsibility as a Qatari national to initiate the importance of heritage and culture through the preservation of
traditional knowledge.
Erin Gibson
My name is Erin Gibson. I was born on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. I grew up, with my twin sister, in a very active home, partaking passionately in both sports and the performing arts from an early age. Throughout my schooling, I competed provincially in ballet for many years, enjoyed my role as Student Council President (with my twin sister acting Vice President), and spent much time outdoors; particularly at my family’s beach cabin in Egmont BC. After graduating high-school, my now husband, John, and I moved to Hong Kong together where I began my life as a ballet teacher. We travelled extensively throughout Southeast Asia before venturing to Qatar to visit a friend on holiday, through which my husband was offered a teaching job at the College of the North Atlantic. Upon getting married in Vancouver over the winter of 2007, we relocated to Doha where she applied to VCUQ’s Interior Design Program where I’m is currently studying at sophomore level. Two years into life in Qatar, I continue to enjoy the diversity of its people, its fascinating local culture, and the unique opportunities afforded to students of Qatar Foundation, such as this one. I am thrilled about the prospect of initiating positive change in the lives of residents of the country.
Fatima Zainal
I am a junior student in graphic design. I am interested in the Synapse course because I like to be involved in problem seeking projects, especially those concerning real community issues. Also having the opportunity to work collaboratively with students from other majors and different years. Learning new techniques and methods to approach an issue or topic was the most beneficial aspect of this class. One of the methodologies used to analyze a topic was to perceive it in the past, present and future. Moreover, having the chance to work with people from the community was very rewarding. We gained some outside knowledge and a scope of the issues to be addressed in society. It is a privilege for me to participate and share my ideas for
a well-known, international conference such as Synapse.
